Senate President Ahmad Lawan has again countered claims to lead the legislature on a rubber stamp.

The Senate President claimed in an interview with Daily Trust that they disagreed with President Muhammadu Buhari on several occasions but followed a method of resolution “behind the scenes.”

Lawan averaged that it would be unfair to him, to the people and senators who elected him to choose from the outset just to fight in the name of the legislature’s independence.

He stated…

“Are you aware that we disagreed many times with Mr. President, the executive branch of government? People don’t know, because what we’ve embraced is going behind the scenes and solving our problems. Are you aware that we disagreed many times with Mr. President, the executive branch of government? People don’t know, because what we’ve embraced is going behind the scenes and solving our problems.

“I also witnessed better service delivery for the people when the two arms had cooperation and mutual respect.

“I think I’m going to be disrespectful to myself, to the people and to the senators who chose me to choose from the start only to fight in the name of the legislature’s freedom.

“I believe in parliamentary freedom more than people think. Now, they say we are an ensemble of rubber stamps.

“What people don’t know is that in the view of the Senate or the National Assembly there is nothing that would jeopardize our people’s rights or the welfare of the majority of Nigerians that we are going to do.

“Call us something, if you like, do not call us a rubber stamp, call us a steel stamp or something. I can tell you, this senate did 27 confirmations today, in the last count.

“Tell me, if we didn’t do those confirmations; tell me how to go on with governance? There will be so much arbitrariness, maybe ministers will take advantage of where they are to be overseen; a lot of abuse could take place.

“So, we shouldn’t have people confirmed? If it’s rubber stamping we confirm.
