” I sold Club World Cup medal to buy cocaine, it lasted for two days’ – Ex-footballer Flavio Donizete reveals 13-year battle with drug addiction

Former Brazilian player, Flavio Donizete, defender of Sao Paulo, has disclosed how his addiction to cocaine made him sell his most precious possessions as a footballer only to feed his drug habit.

Donizete, who came to Sao Paolo through the youth system, played a bit of a part in 2005 as Sao Paulo won the Paulista State Championship and the Copa Libertadores before crowning their victory over Liverpool in the Club World Cup.

The center-back won a gold medal for being part of the squad that beat Liverpool despite the fact that he had little time to play on the pitch and has now admitted that he was selling the medal to fuel a drug addiction that destroyed a promising career.

I sold it to buy drugs. I sold it for 7,000 reais (around £2,875/$3,500),” he explained to Globoesporte.

“After becoming familiar with cocaine, I lost everything else. Because I was a moderate user at the beginning. Until cocaine became more important in my life, I began to lose everything I had. I used to buy drugs with any money I saved. I wouldn’t let myself be without drugs.

“I started losing any money in my account, my possessions. I lost everything except my wife, daughters and family who are still with me even today.”

Donizete, 36 now works as a gardener in the city of Americana, Brazil, and is alcohol free. And dreams to be back in football

Each day I went out I’d say, ‘Today I can drink as late as I want, because the effect wears off when I use cocaine. Find some ‘let’s go.

“I was rarely at home, it was just parties and drinking. Without taking alcohol, there were days I wouldn’t go a single day.

“I started getting overweight from the drink, got a knee injury and I couldn’t drive. Both that and the coke. And I said, “It’s that.” I gave up soccer for good.

My biggest regret is having tried cocaine. It destroyed me.”
